Woven Dimensions

I have never been an avid sports fan, but a love for certain sports was passed down to me by my dad, a long-time cricketer and athlete. Over the years, I have come to understand and appreciate football through my two nephews, both of whom are players, especially the younger one, who plays for his school team and Delhi’s Under-16 squad. The 2026 World Cup was front and center in our family conversations this summer, with different members supporting their chosen teams. Ever since a long trip to Spain in the summer of 2024, my admiration for the country has grown in leaps and bounds. Over the last two years, I have watched Spain fiercely support the Palestinian cause, stand up to the pressure from the US, and maintain a firm stance regarding its support to Palestine's statehood. Not surprisingly, Spain became my team for the World Cup.

I really started watching the tournament closely when Spain made it to the quarterfinals, then the semifinals, and ultimately the finals. Tuning in to the final match triggered a range of emotions and thoughts. Watching the game connected the dots between my travels through Spain, the integrity and grit the country has shown in the political realm, and how its team showed up to play an exciting game of football on July 19 in New York-New Jersey. As someone who likes to process things deeply, I was amazed to see how interwoven these seemingly different dimensions truly were.

During my 2024 trip, a friend and I traveled to nearly ten different places across Spain over two weeks. Because many of these cities and towns were off the beaten tourist path, we experienced the culture and people in their rawest form. The anthropologist in me, who loves to examine and analyze society, was amazed by Spain’s rich diversity—its art and architecture heavily shaped by Roman, Islamic, Gothic, Moorish, and Modernist influences. Having grown up in India and lived in the US, I am naturally drawn to diverse identities, so this aspect of Spain resonated strongly with me. Traveling as a foodie made the journey even better; the cuisine across different regions was just as delightful as the people. I could go on and on about the trip, especially since I fell in love with Madrid and flew out promising to return someday soon.

Over the past year, my admiration for Spain has only strengthened due to its relentless support for Palestine. Its consistency, discipline, and deep commitment to stand on the right side of history—driven by an underlying value for humanity—have been phenomenal to witness. More recently, its determination and courage to withstand threats from the US have been notable and deserving of endless cheers.

All these thoughts and observations came rushing back as I watched Spain’s brilliant football team take the field on Sunday. I saw the racial and religious diversity of the team; I saw their fierce determination to possess the ball; I saw their discipline and cool demeanor, especially in comparison to the aggressive Argentine players. I saw vibrance and a deep value-orientation in their presence on the field, and ultimately, I saw a team that lived up to everything defining their country—at least as I have experienced it. Oh, and I certainly noted how they snubbed DJT while accepting the medals! Though I watched the match alone at home, I felt a massive adrenaline rush and a profound sense of relief that the good people finally lifted the cup. And, in that moment a beautiful tapestry got woven in my mind.
